  • Abstract
In this paper, the performance of satellite image transmission over binary erasure channel was evaluated, when the image is compressed using the algorithm recommended by Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS). The transmission was software simulated using a test set of 2,000 images from CBERS-2B and considering three different scenarios: (a) with no channel code, (b) using a LT-code, and (c) using a LT-code with unequal error protection (UEP). The performance was evaluated using two figure of merits: the probability to reach a minimum acceptable Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and the mean of PSNR, given that a minimum acceptable PSNR was achieved. Preliminary results were presented, showing that the use of a LT-code can improve significantly the performance, with the best results when the UEP technique was applied.
