Abstract
Power system is subjected to transition in different states in real time. Owing to this, power line flows may lead to chaotic divergent situations leading towards cascade failure or blackout. Chaotic monitoring performance index needs importance in light of past failures or blackout experiences for assessing divergent dynamic situations involving high complexity in existing power system state. At present multi bus power system security assessment is done based on MW performance index. It needs to be aided in view of recent blackouts. This paper proposes discrete Largest Lyapunov Exponent as supportive chaotic index to monitor exponential divergent power flow apart from usual MW performance index for dynamic security assessment. Combined MW-Chaotic performance index will highlight closeness to cascaded failure or blackout apart from overload limit violation indices. Algorithm formulated for combined performance index will help Power System Utilities to arrive at vigilant monitoring about futuristic failures and blackouts. IEEE 14 bus power system is analysed in the paper and results clearly demonstrate the efficacy of such monitoring index.
