  • Abstract
In recent years micro aerial vehicles have been investigated in a wide range of mission-oriented civilian applications, such as search and rescue, reconnaissance, and delivery of light-weight objects. In the paper we tried to apply an MAV system equipped with various kinds of sensors to assist the patrol task of surveillance and security monitoring in campus, factories, or community buildings, which has the advantage that it can fly over obstacles such as barriers, fences, and ditches. We utilize a commercial MAV with built-in cameras to transmit the aerial imagery through the Wi-Fi connection. To fulfill the security monitoring function, we further design a sensing and control board based on the Holtek HT66FU50 micro controller. The board integrates a variety of sensors and alarm devices mounted on the MAV, including ultrasonic sensors, IR motion sensor, fire sensor, light sensor, GPS, and gas detector to gather environmental information and detect abnormal events such as fire alarm, intruder alert and lethal gas leakage. We also develop a GUI program using the Java language with the Eclipse IDE to allow the guard in the security monitoring center to remotely operate the security MAV and observe the sensor data.
