Vehicle speed estimation from tracking license plates

Radars used in speed cameras must emit narrow radar beams in order to cover at most one lane width and avoid measuring the speed of vehicles in adjacent lanes, which increases their cost and complexity. A method of computing the vehicle speed from fixed infrared images of the license plates delimits the speed interval of a vehicle. This method provides a means of indicating the actual target of radar speed measurements in situations when confusion is possible due to the presence of surrounding vehicles.
