One implementation of companion screen functionality for hybrid broadcast broadband television

This paper presents one design and implementation of companion screen functionality required by Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV 2.0 specification. The proposed system enables discovering and launching of applications from the digital TV devices to companion screen devices (smart phones, tablet etc.) and vice versa, and communication between those applications. During the design one of the main aims was as much as possible platform independent solution. Our solution is integrated in both Android and Linux set-top boxes, and appropriate testing was done. For testing purposes HbbTV test applications are implemented.
