Abstract
In recent years, the potential use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has increased tremendously in various application areas such as disaster management, border security, weather forecasting etc. The dynamic topology and distributed nature of Wireless Sensor Networks creates special requirements in routing protocols that should be accomplished. The most critical feature of a routing protocol so as to be efficient for WSNs is the reduced energy consumption and hence extending network lifetime. In the past, many energy efficient routing protocols have been proposed by different authors for WSNs but they fail to maximize life time of the network as energy dissipation is higher. In this paper, we propose energy efficient SPIN based Hybrid Multi Hop Clustering Scheme (SHMCS) using a combination of EEHMCS and SPIN protocols. The proposed protocol provides higher network lifetime than EEHMCS protocol for hierarchical routing.
