Abstract :
Recent tendencies indicate that new and reconductored power lines are declining from the traditional cross arm mounted overhead connection types. Instead of the traditional connections, underground cables are increasing as it is one of the most popular choices. At the same time, LVABC is another type of overhead cable spreading in distribution networks, which has a bundled property similar to the underground cable. This property provides these cable conductors considerably lower reactance than that of the normal overhead configurations. Therefore, one of the most used techniques for voltage regulation - reactive power compensation, may not be as effective with these cables as it is in case of traditional power lines. This paper presents comparison between voltage sensitivities of these cables (underground and LVABC) and traditional lines with respect to cable length, demand, power factor of the load, and reactive power support in the network. The issue of inadequate voltage regulation from reactive power compensation has been examined and consequently alternative solution to regulate voltage has been analysed. This study is potentially informative for new technology adoption process in power industry and for further research in academia.
