Abstract :
This paper, which is part one of a two-part series, presents a technique for assessing and developing control strategies for DSM in SGs by using reliability as a measure. The assessment of developed load models by aggregating portions of load and observing the impact on power network behaviour form an integral part of this work. Important input data for the assessment are presented. Reliability indices (SAIDI, SAIFI, MAIFI and ENS) are used to evaluate the test networks. The assessment technique is explained using two test networks (IEEE 14 Bus and UK radial), which supply three generic load sectors with varying demand compositions (residential, commercial and industrial). This approach allows for a comparison of different networks and to observe the correlations between reliability performance and network characteristics for varying load categories. The obtained load models are used in the part 2 paper for assessing potential benefits of DSM resources in SGs.
