Abstract
The aim of the study was to establish the presence and severity (number of components) of metabolic syndrome (MS) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). We conducted a cross-sectional study on 146 patients admitted in 2012 to Sleep Laboratory Cluj-Napoca, for nocturnal sleep study. The prevalence of MS was 75.3%. There were significant differences regarding the oxygen desaturation index (ODI) p= 0.006, lowest oxygen saturation p= 0.016, between patients with and without MS. There were statistically significant differences in neck circumference p<;0.0001, waist circumference p<;0.0001, body mass index (BMI) p=0.002, fasting blood glucose p<;0.0001, HDL cholesterolp<;0.0001, triglycerides p<;0.0001 between patients with 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 MS components. The prevalence of MS is very high in patients with OSAS from Cluj-Napoca, Romania. OSAS is more severe in patients with MS and the severity of OSAS increases with the increase in the number of MS components.
