Abstract
The cellular network performance is measured by its spectral and energy efficiency. Since the power consumption is an important key success for the upcoming heterogeneous (HetNet) communication system generations, component, linear, and parameterized power models are presented in this paper. The proposed models analyse and evaluate the power consumption participants in both Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) and High Power Nodes (HPNs), collectively called Heterogeneous-Cloud Radio Access Network (H-CRAN), which is proposed to enhance both energy and spectral efficiencies. Comparison of the cooling and total power consumption of C-RAN, Macro Base Station (MBS), and H-CRAN deployment is presented. Results showed that a C-RAN network reduced the cooling power consumption to about 87%, which reduced the overall power consumption by about 40% compared to MBS deployment. Finally, H-CRAN cooling and total power consumption is evaluated by integrating C-RAN and MBS power consumption models.
