Abstract
In this work, a new approach to design an antenna aperture tuning circuit for mobile phone antennas is proposed. Currently in the industry, the design of such a tuning circuit is done by using antenna S-parameter measurements. This method gives limited insight into the antenna performance parameters, specifically radiation power, which is a key performance parameter for an antenna. This paper presents a new approach to design an antenna tuning circuit, which gives additional in-depth knowledge on the performance improvement of the tuned antenna system. The proposed method uses non-linear 3-Dimensional Electro-Magnetic simulations of a mobile phone antenna structure which is co-simulated with antenna tuning circuit elements to realise an antenna tuning system. The effect of antenna tuning elements on the antenna parameters can be visualized in addition to simulating the antenna radiation patterns and the Total Radiated Power (TRP). Measurement and simulation results, of a fabricated prototype antenna, are presented and a close relation is found.
