Abstract :
Wavelet transform has become an emerging technology in the field of Image compression. Concept of discrete wavelet transform leads to compaction of energy, high compression ratio and good quality of image after reconstruction. This paper shows how compression can be achieved by sub-band decomposition analysis. Further wavelet based processing solves contradiction of time and frequency resolution as compared to Fourier transform. It also overcomes the problem of blocking artifact at high frequency resolution which is observed in Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). Image compression using wavelet transform is a technique to represent the image with less number of bytes which leads to efficient transmission bandwidth and less space is required to store the image.
