Abstract
The Microwave Applications Research Group of the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia in collaboration with the Applied Electromagnetism Research Group of the University of Castilla-La Mancha started to work with Substrate Integrated Waveguides in 2009. In this work the results of all these years dedicated to this field are presented. This includes the development of two different and highly efficient analysis methods for the analysis of Substrate Integrated Waveguides. The first one is an analytic method that uses open space cylindrical modes and is extremely efficient for discrete sweep. The second one is a hybrid method that combines the Method of Moments and Mode Matching for the electromagnetic analysis at a single frequency, but that greatly enhances its performance with a very efficient fast frequency sweep scheme based on Asymptotic Waveform Evaluation or Complex Frequency Hopping. For designing several topologies of filters in Substrate Integrated Waveguides, several design techniques such as segmentation, space mapping or mapping from rectangular waveguide have been used and combined in different fashions. A novel technique for performing a TRL calibration of manufactured Substrate Integrated Circuits has also been developed. Finally, a novel type of Substrate Integrated Waveguide, the so-called Empty Substrate Integrated Waveguide has been designed, fabricated, and measured, with excellent results (the quality factor has been increased an 800% when compared to the traditional Substrate Integrated Waveguide).
