Abstract :
The Korean government awarded two 3G license by a comparative evaluation system in December 15, 2000. In the beginning, it was supposed to select three operators of two W-CDMA technology and one CDMA technology. But only two IMT-2000 licenses were granted to Korea Telecom IMT (KT IMT) and SK based on W-CDMA technology because other providers, LG Glocom and Korea IMT-2000 Consortium, failed to get the minimum total points or least partial points for IMT-2000 license. A third licence using CDMA technology was awarded later in 2001 and commercial service will begin in May 2002. This paper analyzes the Korean mobile telecommunications market structure and carriers´ 3G strategies in Europe and Asia telecommunications market. In the prospect of Korean mobile telecommunications market structure, it also includes the trend of the mobile telecommunications and service deployment from 2G/2.5G to 3G. We discuss how the market structure and business direction of five existing operators are changing by comparing the strategies of the Korean 3G service carriers
