  • Abstract
Summary form only given. Over the last few years, the idea that physical products will more and more be replaced by services have gained momentum. It is assumed that society evolves in a direction that will make services ever more important, whereas physical products will decline. This, however, might not necessarily mean that services will replace products, but the relative importance of services will be more pronounced. There is no doubt that services as such are a growing part of our economy, and we should certainly look into the consequences of this. Products that are mature enough that people trust them are usually not bought because of their technical properties. Instead, people choose the product and the supplier based on emotions. But how do you give a service product emotional properties? The service has no looks, no quality materials, no show-off potential, no style. It is a question if it can at all be an expression of personality or taste. And when these properties are thought to be the most important in a purchase decision, one can question the marketability of service products. The current examples of successful products with considerable service elements indicate that price is the main selling point, and this is not a good business strategy in the long run
