Abstract :
Historically, the Korean governments have been trying to promote prestigious high-tech areas like information technology, biotechnology, and so on. These technology areas are very important, but they need lots of resources, especially R&D infrastructure in their own regions. The authors argue that regions should have strategic orientation in their promotion of regional S&T activities. Regional efforts to improve regional development should be based on their own economic and S&T infrastructure that has been accumulated historically. Regions should identify their own strategic technology fields that could be well fitted to their specific economic and regional R&D infrastructure. We name these technology areas as "strategically specific technology fields (SSTFs)"
