A Research on an in-House Training Software and Its Application

With the publication of IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases and its clear statement that "the ability to use and understand the IMO SMCP is required for the certification of officers in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more", it has become a great task for Maritime English teachers to teach the SMCP well. The SMCP Training Board is the product as a result of "twinning" between a maritime English teacher and a computer specialist, which is developed from some efficient classroom activities based on the modified PPP lesson framework. By applying it in a class, it has been found that the training soft is useful in improving the students self-learning abilities and also make SMCP learning easier, more interesting, and finally more fruitful.
