Abstract :
Large (6-8°C), deep (~250 m), internal tides have been observed off the south shores of Oahu. These water temperature oscillations are semi-diurnal, and we have yet to formulate the dynamics generating these tides so deep within the water column. Numerical simulations are presented that reproduce this phenomenon, for both Oahu as well as Kauai. The simulations allow us to provide an initial spatial characterization of these deep, internal tides. The simulation results also provide an ability to predict when and to what degree the internal tides would impact acoustic propagation for Naval activities around Oahu and Kauai
