Abstract :
Power electronic converters have evolved extensively in the past few decades from the classical low switching frequency thyristorised converters to the modern high-frequency MOSFETs and IGBTs making them compact. Matrix converters offer an “all silicon” solution for single stage power conversion for a three phase system. This technology can replace the conventional back to back converters. This paper evaluates the working of a matrix converter connected to an induction motor drive. The setup uses a control hardware consisting of DSP-FPGA processor. The DSP used for the application is TMS320F2812PGFA and the FPGA used is Cyclone II EP2C5Q208I8. An important part of the paper is dedicated to a discussion of modulation techniques, filter design and also controller design for the proposed setup. The paper also throws light on technical challenges and future scope of the converter.
