Abstract :
This paper investigates the double negative properties of metamaterials. A unit cell metamaterial with side length of 4mm and thickness of 0.2mm is modeled using a combination of split ring resonator with thin wire and is simulated in Ansys HFSS 14. In this structure, the split ring resonator is capable of producing negative permeability and thin wire is capable of producing negative permittivity. So a combination of these two structures are capable of producing double negativity. This paper uses S parameter retrieval method to retrieve the constituent parameters of the structure. The double negative metamaterial element is modelled on a FR4 substrate with dielectric constant of 4.4 and loss tangent of 0.02. The various analysis performed on the structure proves the presence of double negative characteristics in the frequency band between 5GHz and 6GHz.
