Abstract :
Network which is built and functions without any infrastructure is identified as Ad hoc network. Mobile Ad hoc network (MANET) is one the Ad hoc networks in which nodes of network are mobile in nature. Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) are subgroup of Ad hoc network which has inherited mobile characteristics from MANETs. In VANETs the vehicles acts a nodes and they communicate to exchange information. VANETS has many applications in which enhancing the safety of passenger is a major one. For transportation public majorly relays on two mean bus and trains in which train is a public transport system which has fixed time schedule. Buses are majorly utilized public transport system due to its flexibility, but still it is not the favorite means of transport for passengers due to the uncertainty in time schedule. The uncertainty is caused due to following reasons varying traffic, accidents, varying number of passengers etc. This demotivates passengers to use bus for travel. This problem can be solved with help of Real Time Passenger Information System (RTPIS). It is a system which provides real time information regarding the position of bus. A software is used which calculates the estimated time of arrival of bus. It distributes the information regarding the bus position and estimated time of arrival to passenger through SMS, web based GUI and display terminal at bus stop. This system not only helps passenger it also helps administrators and drivers by allowing them to add new routes into database easily. The exact position of buses is obtained by the GPS which is attached to all buses and all this information is monitored by a server. In this paper, Wi-MAX has been compared with Wi-Fi and WLAN to check for better performance ratio. An effective scheme for better connectivity of the bus with stations is proposed. The implementation is done using NS2.
