Abstract :
The paper deals with a recently implemented series compensation project in Argentina funded by common resources of smaller generation companies. The purpose of the project was to enhance the post-fault transient stability and increase of transmission capacity of a 500 kV transmission line. The economical aspects of the project in the new deregulated market environment are described. In addition to the series capacitors installation, the project included distance protection systems specially designed for the protection of series compensated transmission lines. In conclusion the application of state of the art series compensation enables better utilization of new or existing generation and transmission facilities without negative impact on the environment.
