Abstract :
Identification of the faulted line in a system can improve the performance of backup protection schemes. This paper presents a Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) based algorithm, where voltage and current signals from synchrophasors placed at strategic locations are used for the identification of faulted line. Conventional backup protection schemes require complex setting and they maloperate under flow transfer which can be avoided using the proposed method. The studies performed on the 39-bus New-England system using data simulated through EMTDC/PSCAD validate accuracy of the proposed algorithm.
