Abstract
In this paper, the sliding mode control (SMC) based vector control is applied to a grid connected doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based variable speed wind energy conversion system to improve the dynamic performances while controlling independently the generated active and reactive powers over traditional PI controller under different wind speed patterns. The robust performance analysis of SMC under grid voltage unbalance and frequency variations has also been carried out and it is observed that the generated active and reactive powers track the respective reference powers with less dynamic error without any specific adjustment of the controller. The Simulation using MATLAB/Simulink on a 1.5MW DFIG based variable speed wind energy conversion system is carried out to analyze the performances of both PI-controllers and SMC based vector control strategies.
