Abstract :
Future power generation systems are expected to be dominated by the penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) of which wind power is the most promising source. The penetration of wind power however, has got its associated problems due to the varying wind speeds. As a result the load frequency control (LFC) of the power system having wind power penetration becomes all the more difficult and complex. This paper considers the two-area power system integrated with doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind power and attempts to study the impact of variations of wind power penetration levels on the LFC characteristics with varying step load disturbances. The parameters of interest are taken as frequency and tie-line power deviations. The proposed control scheme is a fuzzy based control technique. The conventional proportional integral (PI) controller is also implemented for comparison purpose. Simulation results are discussed whereby it is clear that the proposed control scheme is very effective and superior to the conventional PI controller.
