Abstract :
In aircraft power generation system, constant speed drive (CSD) and integrated drive generator (IDG) have play an important part to provide the constant frequency power supply to the aircraft electrical systems. However, these systems have their downsides, particularly they are heavy and being fully mechanical, has the tendency to fail completely if some of its gears and linkages break down. Other than that, aircraft engine rotates much lower than the 400 cycles-per-second required to produce the standard frequency of aircraft electrical system power supply. In this paper, a variable-speed, constant-frequency (VSCF) aircraft power generation system based on a high number input phases matrix converter is proposed. The system is than tested with a Boeing 777-200ER engine as the prime mover and the engine performance is based on a typical flight profile of the aircraft. The proposed aircraft power generation system constant frequency output is validated using modeling and simulation in Matlab/Simulink.
