Abstract
In this paper, an extended Mie scattering method is proposed to calculate the scattered field of randomly canted ellipsoid raindrops. In this method, the ellipsoid raindrop is stretched to a sphere and the coordinate system is rotated to meet the regular condition, then the Mie scattering method is employed to calculate the scattered field. Based on the method, simulations on the different raindrop sizes and canted angles show that, 1) for non-canted raindrops the scattered amplitude turns out to be a function of the droplet sizes, but 2) the scattered field of uniformly canted raindrops is mainly determined by the canted angles. Comparison of the simulation results for different angles and rainfall rates with the reported measurement data in Tsingtao shows the good performance of the method, and further analysis of the relationship between the effective propagation constant and the rainfall rate as well as the raindrop´s canted angles is also presented. According to the equivalence between the canted angle and polarization mode, the effects caused by polarization are also analyzed.
