Abstract
Tone mapping effectively produces high dynamic range images on low dynamic range displays. Global tone mapping is simple and fast because of using the same mapping curve for every pixel without considering its neighboring ones in the radiance map. However, it often loses fine details in an image with low dynamic range displays. In this paper, we propose detail-preserving tone mapping for low dynamic range displays with adaptive gamma correction. We first perform global logarithmic tone mapping to reproduce natural tone for low dynamic range displays. Although global logarithmic mapping effectively considers human perceptual abilities, it often loses some details especially in dark regions. Thus, we perform adaptive gamma correction to achieve local contrast enhancement. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly enhances fine details of images as well as successfully preserves the overall image quality.
