Abstract
In this paper, we propose power-constrained backlight scaling for LCDs using brightness compensated contrast-tone mapping operation, called BCCTMO. First, we increase pixel values to compensate for the reduced brightness caused by backlight dimming for power saving through maintaining the perceived luminance. Then, we perform a contrast-tone mapping operation (CTMO) to reduce the information loss caused by the just mentioned brightness compensation and enhance contrast simultaneously. Finally, we conduct color scaling to reproduce natural colors in LCDs. Experimental results demonstrate that BCCTMO produces high-quality images and saving power compared with state-of-the-art methods.
