Abstract
This paper highlights different application areas along the retail supply chain - from manufacturers to the retail store and all the way to the consumer. It describes both the technical solutions and the benefits for the stakeholders within different application scenarios. The application of RFID in retail still faces some problems and barriers. These are discussed within the context of European radio frequency regulations, European research policy and the general necessity for communication and education and an improved collaboration of supply chain partners. An outlook for developments in the near and extended future is presented.
