Abstract
Cable joints give prospective hot spots in buried cables due to the thicker insulation in the joints than in the cable itself. An interesting new method with evaporative cooling of cable joints will be presented in this paper. A porous material is used to cover the joint as well as a part of the adjacent cable. A gas tight tube around the joint contains a suitable liquid (e.g. Freon 113) which will be absorbed by the porous material and uniformly distributed along the. hot cable surface. By evaporation and the following condensation on the tube the heat transfer will be very effective. Analytical temperature distribution along the joint and the adjacent cable is presented. Experimental results are obtained by experiments, they are in good agreement with the calculated values. The results show that by using this method the hot spots along the cable can easily be eliminated.
