Abstract :
This paper describes the framework and the implementation plan of a web-based platform for supporting collaborative product design evaluation, demonstration and customization. The relevant industrial needs are first outlined. A short overview is given on current Research and Development (R&D) activities aiming at addressing these needs. The conceptual framework and the functionality of the suggested web-based platform are then presented, mainly focusing on the Virtual / Augmented Reality and collaboration features. The design and implementation of the suggested platform are discussed, providing an insight on the architecture and communication aspects. An indicative pilot case is outlined to demonstrate how the suggested approach and tools will be applied in the collaborative review, demonstration and customization of products coming from the textiles industry. Finally, the potential of the web-based platform in addressing the needs of collaborative product development activities is briefly mentioned.
