Abstract
PPMM® Pelletized Polyester Molding Material is a breakthrough in plastics materials technology. This paper describes the properties and end-use applications of a series of new generation free flowing, solid, pelletized, glass fiber reinforced, highly reactive thermoset polyester molding materials. The PPMM molding material is a highly filled, multi-resin composition that combines the most desirable characteristics of the traditional thermosets (heat, flame, chemical and electrical resistance) with those of the "new" engineering thermoplastics (strength, processing ease and pigmentation.) PPMM compounds are fully formulated thermosetting polyester glass fiber reinforced compositions which contain no asbestos. Designed and developed for use in automatic molding systems such as injection, transfer and compression molding, these materials offer major improvements and advantages over single resin systems such as phenolic, alkyd, urea and melamine. Available in a variety of colors, flow and shrinkage grades, PPMM materials have been engineered to meet a wide spectrum of molding conditions and end uses. The PPMM system is a patented technology which was acquired by Polyply from the Koppers Company in early 1982. These pelletized polyester molding materials have been tradenamed POLYRITE® and are available in more than eight grades on a commercial basis from Polyply´s Amsterdam, New York production facility.
