Abstract
This report introduces a new approach to the collection statistical analysis and presentation of data relating to partial discharge activity within solid insulation systems used in major items of plant within the electricity supply industry. The authors briefly discuss present methods of discharge testing, explain the requirements for a new approach and present design details of a microprocessor-based instrument for use in diagnostic testing. Comment is made on the proposed application of this instrument to testing items of electrical plant and small samples of solid insulation. In conclusion the authors claim that the use of an instrument, capable of simultaneously measuring and calculating multiple discharge parameters, enables the condition of any given insulation system to be more fully described and the parameters affecting insulation lifetime to be placed in order of importance.
