Abstract :
In the design of water discharge structure, it may be inevitable to meet bend channels due to the limits by topography and geological conditions. Stilling Basins are usually associated with overflow dams of gravity type. Dissipation of energy depends upon the formation of rollers, turbulence and/or standing waves. Coupled with the influence of the bend channel, the main stream swings toward concave bank, and the water surface tilts to one side in the same cross section. The flow pattern in the bend still basin is more completed and cause adverse effects to the concave bank. The researchers take the bend stilling basin of Wohushan Reservoir Spillway as an instance. Hydraulic model tests and numerical simulation were carried out for the original design with bottom energy dissipater. The results show that the impact of the bend channel is magnified by larger discharge, while the hydraulic jump is free jump and energy dissipation effect is low. Guide wall for the bend stilling basin was recommended.
