Abstract
Most of the developing countries are facing electrical power shortage. High cost of the fossil fuels, their rapid depletion and adverse impact on the atmosphere has led to the intensive research in the field of renewable energy. Various renewable energy sources such wind, solar, bio-mass are already exploited. Hydro power is also a renewable energy source. Small hydro power plants below 5 KW capacity which are known as Pico-hydro power plants are becoming popular due to their inherent advantages. This paper presents laboratory test results of a 3.5 KW induction motor operating as a self excited induction generator. Effect of excitation capacitor on the performance of the generator is discussed. Authors have fabricated and tested a 200 watt Pico-hydro generation unit using a water wheel at actual site. Design procedure of a water wheel is explained.
