Abstract
This paper is concerned about the optimal allocation of Phasor Measurement Units and at the same time ensuring the complete network observability with the available Phasor Measurement Units. Due to large interconnection of the power system it is not possible to allocate Phasor Measurement Units at strategic location in one go. So, in this paper a multistage (three stages) optimal placement of Phasor Measurement Units method is proposed based on network connectivity information. This paper consist of two parts viz. Part 1 represents the optimal placement of Phasor Measurement Units considering the power system operating at normal condition and Part 2 represents the optimal placement of Phasor Measurement Units considering contingency cases like single line of the system or single Phasor Measurement Units of the system outages. In both these methods complete observability of power system is assured with the optimally placed Phasor Measurement Units.
