Abstract
This paper reviews the recent progress and standardization activities on 40 Gbit/s channel technologies, focusing on technologies effective in the combined use of WDM. Furthermore, this paper reports a 40 Gbit/s/ prototype designed around the latest technologies and that complies with the latest standard. The paper also reports a tera-bit/s field trial, held in Japan on November 2000, that used the 40 Gbit/s/ch prototype.
