Abstract :
10 Gb/s EDFA-free NRZ transmission over 1800 km distributed Raman amplified links with 45 dB gain has been demonstrated. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the longest distributed Raman amplified 10 Gb/s transmission without lumped amplifiers. The problems of achieving the necessary very high Raman gain has been solved. For simulating the Raman amplification process a novel model has been developed and verified by experiments.
