Abstract
Intrinsic size effects in PbTiO/sub 3/ are considered within the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire free energy density formalism. Coefficients of the free energy functional for point group 4 mm were determined as a function of size, using experimentally determined size-dependent order parameters (spontaneous polarization and strains) in the range 28-149 nm. The proposed thermodynamic theory is adequate to describe the observed size-driven changes in phase stability in tetragonal PbTiO/sub 3/.
