Abstract
Lithium Niobate is well known for its polarizability into a piezoelectric material. Along the piezoelectric direction, there can be the complicating presence of an evanescent wave at the boundary of the sample. This affects measurements of the nonlinearity parameter, β, along the [001] direction in both the poled and unpoled states. New measurements of β in Lithium Niobate (both poled and unpoled) are presented. The effect of the polarization phase transition giving rise to piezoelectricity was to reduce β from 1.6 to 1.0
