Abstract :
The future wireless communication networks will be all-IP based and have frequency reuse factor one thanks to the advancements in smart antennas. In this paper, we study the admission control problems in such networks and use both analysis and simulations to compare four admission control algorithms in terms of the maximum traffic load they can accommodate such that the QoS targets can be met. It is found that the performance of a simple cell threshold based admission strategy is at least comparable with more complicated ones. To account for the impact of handoff on the system performance, we introduce a new concept called handoff density, which, together with traditional traffic density, determines the system performance. The results in this paper also show that in general handoff worsens the system performance.
