Abstract
An approximate method for the analysis of planar waveguide distributed-feedback lasers is given. Symmetric index grating structures with and without parasitic losses are investigated. Characteristics of a planar distributed-feedback Nd laser are obtained with the help of expressions relating the normalized small-signal coefficient alpha /sub oMN/L, to the output power PP/sub NMout/ normalized to the saturation power P/sub s/, the normalized volume losses coefficient alpha /sub MNloss/L, the scattering losses coefficient alpha /sub ML/L, and parameters of the waveguide.
