Abstract
In this paper a novel position sensorless drive method for a salient pole PM motor is proposed based on the Walsh function. The Walsh harmonic component of ripple-current generated by PWM inverter with 20 kHz makes it possible to estimate rotor direction. However, the magnetic pole (N or S) cannot be identified through magnetic saliency. In the proposed scheme, magnetic saturation is used to identify the magnetic pole, which causes armature current distortion. The proposed circuit detects a second order harmonic component of distorted current, with separating the small ripple-current from the motor drive current. The proposed method was verified by several experimental results
