Abstract :
The author discusses his views on the plight of the nuclear power industry. As compared to its status in other countries, the industry has become embroiled in controversy, has been subjected to prolonged delays as a result of interventions, government regulations and uncertainties, to the extent that the future viability of this important source of energy seems uncertain at best. The Three Mile Island incident proved to be practically the last nail in the coffin, although the positive aspects of this incident have not been given nearly the emphasis that the negative aspects have. He concludes that we in the nuclear engineering profession are to perform our professional responsibilities adequately we must arm ourselves with all available information and must make ourselves the means of disseminating this information to the public, in unbiased and, as far as possible, technically correct form.
