Abstract
Although Volta developed the first chemico-electric battery (the Voltaic pile) in 1800, and Davy demonstrated in 1809 the use of the electric arc as a source of light, it was not until the 1870s that a system of electricity generation and lighting was advanced which effectively led to the establishment of the electric light and supply industries.
