Abstract
In this paper dynamic particle-shape measurements are presented using a near-field optical sensor. The sensor consists of two elongated photodiodes that are illuminated from the top. When a particles moves over the sensor it will partially block the light, which results in a drop of photocurrent proportional to the width of the particle. We have performed measurements using irregularly shaped PVC test particles having a diameter of 30-80 microns. The measurements prove that accurate size and shape information is obtained under the conditions that are found in a cytometer.
