  • Abstract
    In this paper, we propose a stereoscopic broadcasting system model and a stereoscopic video CODEC that consists of the four layers to code even and odd field corresponding to the left and right video sequences, respectively. The proposed CODEC codes stereoscopic video sequences considering three display devices, the frame/field shuttering display and 2D (2-dimensional) display; devices. Therefore, the field-based stereoscopic video CODEC makes it possible to transmit the coded bit-streams of the only necessary fields to the user´s display device and decode those fields even though all of the four fields are not transmitted. The simulation results shows that in the field shuttering display, which is used for PC monitors, the data amount for transmission and decoding is reduced to half of that in MPEG-2 MVP with the almost same quality.
