Abstract
In recent years the energy density of commercially available neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets could be continuously enhanced up to 422 kJ/m3. Such strong permanent magnets offer a whole field of new applications. In this reported work, it is shown that with modern NdFeB magnets even the diamagnetically stabilised levitation over copper is possible, a material which is only weakly diamagnetic. The levitation of a small NdFeB magnet over copper with a levitation gap of 0.4 mm is demonstrated. The levitation gap is compared to a setup with pyrolytic graphite.
