Abstract
Presents an overview of mathematical and computational models of respiratory rhythm generation. The focus is on models that emphasize the neural origin of the rhythm in the brainstem and the fundamental mechanisms underlying the generation of the rhythm. These models are discussed in the context of the evolution of ideas on how the respiratory rhythm is generated.
